More than a guesthouse

The story of a family house that has welcomed people for generations.

The story behind the name  There used to be another shop right next door. So when Rafa’s grandmother and her sister opened their own a few doors down, the village simply called it la tienda nueva — the new shop. The name stuck. It stuck so well that even today, in Cómpeta, the family is known as “the one from La Tienda Nueva”. The house and the family share the same name.

A small shop, a whole village  The ground floor was the kind of place every village used to have. Behind a wooden counter, glass cabinets held thread, lamps, perfume, small electrics, toys. There were aisles, a window display, and lamps hanging from the ceiling — so many lamps that Rafa, as a child, remembers looking up and not quite being able to count them.  The shop opened during the day and stayed open into the evening, when neighbours pulled chairs out onto the street and sat by the door talking. That was village life in Cómpeta.

Christmas and weddings  Every Christmas, the second floor turned into something close to magic. Toys were laid out so that the children of Cómpeta could come up with their parents, choose what they wanted, and write their letter to the Three Wise Men. On the night of January 5th, the family wrapped presents until late — long after the children had gone to bed.  When a couple in the village was getting married, they came to the shop first. They chose their crockery, their pans, their glasses, their small appliances. Then friends and family came after them, picked something off the list, and brought it to the wedding. For decades, this was where Cómpeta celebrated.

Two generations of women  From the 1950s to the early 2000s, the shop was run first by Rafa’s grandmother and her sister, and then by his mother and his aunt. Two generations of women, behind the same wooden counter, in the same street, looking after the same village.

From Bristol to Cómpeta  The idea of turning the house into a guesthouse came from far away. Rafa and Ninet were living in Bristol, and on a trip through Wales they stayed in a hostel with a homely feel. Rafa thought: we could do this back home — but with private rooms. A house that welcomes people, the way his family had always done, but in a new way.

The same house, a new chapter  Today, where the wooden counter once stood, there is a quiet living room. Where neighbours used to come to buy lamps and toys, travellers now come to stay. The space has changed, but the idea hasn’t: this has always been a house full of people.

Location

Nestled underneath Almijara Natural Park and close to the Mediterranean, we are quietly tucked away in the ancient mountain village of Cómpeta, a village where the past and the present, tradition and culture, come together to reveal the roots of a town that has a long history.

Just a short drive from our guesthouse is the impressive Maroma (6,788 ft.), the highest mountain in Malaga. Along with stunning views of the Axarquía Valley and the Natural Park.

Cómpeta is conveniently located about 30–40 minutes from the coast, making our guesthouse a great place to discover the Axarquía, its beautiful Mediterranean coast, its mountains, its white villages,… from a quiet place away from mass tourism.

Axarquia is a region where artists, travellers, mountaineers and walkers alike have all been flocking here for centuries. You’ll find an abundance of cafés, inns, restaurants, gift shops, museums, historical bridges, Moorish minarets and a 16th-century church.
