The walking experience

Walks combine mountain trails, ancient mule tracks and historic paths connecting whitewashed villages across La Axarquía. Routes are carefully selected to showcase the variety of the region, from terraced hillsides and river valleys to open mountain landscapes and panoramic views.

Walking days are planned at a moderate pace, with time for breaks and to enjoy the surroundings. The emphasis is on experiencing the landscape and the villages rather than covering long distances, creating a relaxed but rewarding walking holiday.

Day by day programme

A varied week of walking through white villages, mountain landscapes and natural parks.

Day 1 – Arrival in Cómpeta

Arrival in the white village of Cómpeta and time to settle in at the accommodation. After meeting the group, there is a welcome briefing and an introduction to the week ahead, outlining the walks, the area and what to expect over the coming days.

The rest of the day is free to relax, explore the village or enjoy a drink on one of the terraces before dinner.

The walk begins at the small San Antón Chapel in Cómpeta, where we leave the village behind and follow tracks winding through avocado and olive terraces. As the path gently descends, views open up across the valley before leading us into the white village of Canillas de Albaida.

From Canillas, we continue along an ancient irrigation channel, following a peaceful acequia that still supplies water to the surrounding terraces. This historic path leads us towards the former Moorish village of Árchez, home to one of the best-preserved Arabic minarets in the region, dating back to the 14th century.

The return journey takes us back towards Cómpeta, with a stop at a small, family-run winery where we enjoy a tasting of local Moscatel wines and learn more about this traditional part of Axarquía life.

Today’s walk begins in Cómpeta, climbing steadily into the natural park towards Puerto del Collado. From here, we follow an ancient muleteer path once used to link La Axarquía with the province of Granada.

The route winds through pine forests and open mountain landscapes, passing the remains of former roadside inns that once offered shelter to travellers along this historic route. Wide views across the surrounding mountains make this a rewarding and atmospheric day in the heart of the natural park.

Today’s walk sets off from Cómpeta, gradually making its way towards Canillas de Albaida before following the course of the Cájula river upstream. The path winds through fertile farmland and terraced hillsides, with avocado groves and olive trees giving way to pine forest as we climb deeper into the valley.

As the route gains height, a dirt track leads us up to the historic Cruz del Muerto before beginning a gentle descent through woodland towards the tiny Moorish village of Salares. We enter the village by crossing an old Arabian bridge, a fitting arrival into one of the most atmospheric and least-changed villages in the region.

After time to explore the village and enjoy the surroundings, we return to Cómpeta later in the afternoon.

For those who wish to explore further afield, there is also the possibility to visit Málaga, the coast or the historic city of Granada, depending on personal interests.

Today’s walk begins in the village of Canillas de Aceituno, following tracks through avocado and olive terraces before entering the natural park. The route then follows a historic acequia, gradually leading us deeper into a dramatic mountain landscape shaped by water and time.

The highlight of the day is the spectacular El Saltillo suspension bridge, spanning the deep gorge of the Almanchares river. Crossing high above the river below, this striking structure offers unforgettable views and a real sense of place within the natural park. From here, the walk continues along mountain paths towards the white village of Sedella.

For the final walk of the week, we head into the mountains that once sheltered resistance fighters and guerrilla groups, an area with a strong sense of history and dramatic scenery. After a short transfer, the route begins with a steady ascent, gaining height as we leave the valley behind and climb into open mountain terrain.

As the path rises, wide views open up across the surrounding sierras, offering a fitting finale to the week’s walking. The route then descends towards El Acebuchal, a former abandoned village that has been brought back to life in recent years and provides the perfect setting to enjoy a relaxed and celebratory lunch.
