Peaks of the Axarquía

A challenging walking week with two summits, including La Maroma — the highest peak in Málaga.

Overview

A demanding walking holiday for experienced hikers in good shape. Two major summits, an iconic hanging bridge, a historic muleteer trail and a day in the lost village of El Acebuchal. The week climbs in difficulty, peaks with La Maroma (2,069 m), and finishes with the spectacular Saltillo bridge.

For walkers used to long days and steep ascents.

The Walking Experience

Walks follow high mountain trails, forest tracks and long ascents through the Sierras of Tejeda and Almijara. Two summit days anchor the week, with sustained climbs, exposed ridges and panoramic views that open out over the coast, the natural park and the Sierra Nevada.

Walking days are long and the pace is steady. Days are ordered so that the week builds in difficulty, with a rest day before the ascent of La Maroma.

A varied week of walking through white villages, mountain landscapes and natural parks.

DAY 1 — Saturday: Arrival

Arrive at La Tienda Nueva, settle into your room and meet the group. The rest of the afternoon is free to relax, explore the village or enjoy a drink on one of the terraces. In the evening, welcome dinner at a local restaurant in Cómpeta with Rafa.

We start from the old electricity factory of Canillas de Albaida and follow the muleteer trail that once connected the Axarquía to Granada. A long day through pine forests, mountain passes and historic trading stops, with views opening as we climb.

Dinner: at a selected local restaurant.

Our first summit of the week. A steep climb through pine and rock to the top of Cerro Lucero, with extraordinary views over the coast, Sierra Nevada and the whole of the Axarquía.

Dinner: at a selected local restaurant.

Starting from El Acebuchal, the lost village hidden between two sierras, we climb Cerro Verde for sweeping views over the natural park. A challenging day in spectacular surroundings.

Dinner: free — choose your own.

A day to rest before La Maroma. Explore Cómpeta, recover at Hierbabuena, or simply do nothing.

Meals: only breakfast included. Lunch and dinner free.

The highest peak in the province of Málaga. A long, demanding ascent through the Sierra de Tejeda, with the reward of one of the great panoramic views in southern Spain — from the Mediterranean to the Sierra Nevada.

Dinner: at a selected local restaurant.

A more technical but less demanding day to close the week. We walk along old water channels, cross the famous Saltillo hanging bridge (54 m long, 70 m above the river), and finish in Sedella.

Dinner: farewell dinner at a local restaurant with Rafa.

Breakfast at Hierbabuena and farewell.
